BCWS burning woody debris to reduce wildfire risk near weather stations
WILLIAMS LAKE—The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) says they are planning to burn close to 115 piles of woody debris in the Cariboo Fire Centre in an attempt to reduce wildfire risks around automated weather stations.
The burning may begin as early as today (Oct.15), however, the BCWS says that their start will be weather dependent, as well as dependent on site conditions, venting conditions and snow cover.
“These piles will be burned to prevent damage to the stations by eliminating fuels that would otherwise be available to burn in the event of a wildfire.”—Release by the BCWS
Burn-site locations include, Prairie Creek: about five kilometres south of the Prairie Creek recreation site on the south side of Horsefly Lake; Place Lake: about 50 kilometres east of Alkali Lake off Place Lake Road; and Gaspard: about 25 kilometres west of Gang Ranch.
