PRINCE GEORGE – After Saturday’s election, MLA-Elect Shirley Bond will be heading back to the legislature with what was largely considered a secure seat. However, the BC Liberals actually lost seats overall.

With 88 of 89 polls reporting, Bond has 7,560 votes. The two other major parties, the NDP and the Green Party, came in second and third.

Laura Parent has 3,477 votes, and Mackenzie Kerr has 1,987. Both mentioned what their plans are now that the election is over.

Kerr said on Saturday “I have two classes left I’m trying to finish online at UNBC right now.”

Kerr also ran last year in the federal election for the Green Party.

Parent says “I’m definitely keeping my eye on the election cycles here in Prince George, wether that’s provincially or federally. I can’t say for sure what my plans are right now, but I’m in the background ready and waiting for the next one.”

Bond said on Saturday, “it’s not about the numbers on a birth certificate, it’s about how you connect with your constituents.”

Bond continues, “I literally love the people that I serve, I know many of them by first names in the Robson valley. I know their businesses, I know their families, I know their issues.”

Kerr said on Saturday, “lots of people are reaching out and saying it’s time for a change.”

Parent says “obviously for a new candidate a snap election is not an easy task. Fortunately I’ve been around in the party for a few years, so I had some of those pre-existing contacts that were really just so helpful for me.”

Parent continues, “but in terms of getting out and into the public, obviously a pandemic adds a level of challenge to that and it’s harder to do things like, you know, engage with voters and get your face and your name out there, but I’m proud of what we accomplished.”

As the Liberals lost seats on Saturday, the two young candidates for the other major parties in Prince George-Valemount don’t appear ready to give up politics just yet.
