Seniors need attention

PRINCE GEORGE – Seniors in this community are facing a triple threat as we creep into winter.

There’s the snow and ice that is winter, there’s the COVID-19 pandemic and a number of facilities that keep seniors active are closed.

That was part of Council’s reasoning behind opening the CN Centre concourse to walkers. The experts say it is vitally important, both physically and mentally, for seniors to stay active.

“It really is important. It’s important for all of us, but if you’re inactive for a period of time, your muscles atrophy a bit. They’re just not ready to move anymore,” says Dawn Hemingway. “On the physical side, it’s important but it’s also important on the social side.”

She says even just walking around your home while on the phone with a friend is helpful on one’s physical health and mental health.

She adds, there is now a service available to seniors in all of BC, rather than just the Lower Mainland and it is as simple as picking up the phone.

“You dial 211 and they will ask you if you want to either volunteer to assist seniors or if you are a senior who needs some support. It’s not going to get you into the CN Centre, but it’s friendly phone calls, it’s virtual visits, picking up prescriptions, groceries.”

And, as we all had to break out the snow shovels this week, she reminds people to look out for your elderly neighbours. If it’s hard for able-bodied people to get around, imagine how challenging it can be for the mobility-challenged.
