Watrous Park may be developed

PRINCE GEORGE – Watrous Park is most noted as the home for the Prince George Lawn Bowling Club. But it may be getting a new home soon.

“There’s a developer interested in developing a seniors project on that property with ninety units,” explains Ian Wells, the General Manager of Planning and Development for the City. “Four-storey assisted living for seniors.”

“We were contacted by the City to come for a meeting before they put out the public notice and told us essentially the same thing,” says Dan Gilgan, President of the Prince George Lawn Bowling Club. “The indication I got from the City is that, if this project does go ahead, they will replace the lawn bowling green at a park somewhere else in the city.”

Notices went out to all the residents within 30 metres of the park and some are not happy about what’s being proposed.

“I like the park,” says Mark Mosse, who lives on the corner of Wainright Street and Third Avenue. “And I have three grandchildren. Lots of other people in the neighbourhood use the park a lot and the lawn bowling, I like seeing it.” However, Wells notes, the sale of the land in question is not a done deal. “It’s not cast in stone. It’s part of a process we go through, gather comments. it’s parkland so there’s a parkland process, where we meet with the neighbourhood, gather more comments to see how we want to proceed.”

Written comments will be accepted until November 20, no later than five p.m.
