FORT ST. JAMES – BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) sent a specialized team of paramedics to Fort St. James to assist local first responders after they received a high volume of calls over the past week.

Earlier in the day, several news sources claimed there were over 60 cases of COVID-19 in the district of Fort St. James. However, Northern Health confirmed this afternoon in an email that there are approximately 40 active cases.

The BCEHS said, also in an email statement, that local first responders received 33 calls over 6 days. The specialized team was dispatched from Vancouver yesterday.

John Rustad, MLA for Nechako Lakes says “the worst part of it is that there isn’t accurate information being given out in the community, so there’s lots of rumours going around.”

Shirley Bond, Leader of the Opposition says “we have requested a briefing, a direct briefing, to get a better sense of the implications of in Fort St. James and also the implications for UHNBC, because obviously as the regional center we need to understand the capacity issues.”

Currently, the University Hospital of Northern British Columbia is experiencing their own precautionary outbreak.

Fort St. James has had several school exposure events and two public exposure events since November, according to the Northern Health website.

According to Rustad, several constituents have reached out to express concern over what steps should be taken and whether businesses can stay open in Fort St. James.

Yesterday, the Nak’azdli Whut’en first nation shared a news release stating that they were shutting down for two weeks in order to get the virus under control.

In an email response, the BCEHS says “Our paramedic crew arrived safely yesterday in Fort St. James and ‘right off the hop’ they were busy and deployed on a call.”

They say “The community has been overwhelmingly supportive of the [paramedics’] arrival and our local paramedic crews are grateful for the support.
