RCMP thank man for act of ‘honesty’

FORT ST JAMES — The RCMP is thanking a man who found a convenience store unlocked in Fort St James for his act of “honesty.”

North District RCMP Cpl. Madonna Saunderson says last night (Dec.15), the Fort St. James detachment responded to a call of an alarm at a local gas station and convenience store.

“Upon arrival, it was confirmed the front door of the business had been left unlocked at closing,” she says. “A review of the security footage revealed a man entered the store and casually selected a bottle of cola and a bag of chips.”

Saunderson says he went to the counter to pay, and when no one came to serve him, he unsuccessfully searched the store for an employee.

She says the man returned to the counter, sanitized his hands and attempted to scan the items himself but was unable to as the till had been turned off. Wanting the items he went in for, he took cash out of his wallet and left twice the value of the pop and chips on the counter before leaving.

Saunderson says while police were still on scene, the man called to “turn himself in,” describing the circumstances and his desire not to shortchange the business. He returned and was allowed to properly pay for the items and receive the correct amount of change.

“The Fort St. James RCMP commends this individual for his honesty, integrity and attention to COVID-19 precautions during this holiday season,” says Saunderson.
