Mike Morris mulling run for leadership of the BC Liberals

PRINCE GEORGE — A Prince George Liberal MLA is mulling a run at his party’s top job.

Prince George-Mackenzie MLA Mike Morris says he’s been approached from several people about stepping forward.

“The party executive is formulating the rules to run. I’ve had a number of people from across the province that have encouraged me to throw my hat in the ring, so we’ll see what happens in the future.”

“I’ve got a good background in leadership skills in the force (RCMP). I understand what organizational effectiveness is all about. I understand what strategic thinking looks like, and I could probably bring that element into our party.”

Morris, who was first elected in 2013, didn’t say when he plans to make his final decision. So far only Skeena Liberal MLA Ellis Ross has officially declared his intentions to run.

Others rumoured to be interested in the top job include former Surrey mayor Dianne Watts, former Liberal MLAs Kevin Falcon and Jas Johal along with current Kelowna-Mission Liberal MLA Renee Merrifield.

The job opened up after former leader Andrew Wilkinson stepped down following his party’s lopsided loss to the NDP in last October’s provincial election.

The party plans to choose their new leader early next year.
