Mar 10, 2021 | 3:15 PM

Prince George – A local group is looking to fill the gaps and lend a helping hand to the homeless community in the Hart and downtown Prince George. And, the co-owner has received an overwhelming response from the community.

Gerry Healy knows first hand what it’s like to live on the streets.

“Well I was on the streets once before myself and I suffered from Frostbite, malnutrition, drug abuse and I fell in through the cracks, now I didn’t have a voice to help me back then. So I want to be a voice for them now. So they can get the help they need.”

Originally, a conversation on social media showing concern for a local homeless man in the Hart which then leads to a community effort to help others. And so the Together We Stand group was created, which now has over 500 hundred members.

“There were so many people that reached out to help, that I thought something needed to be done with that momentum, but it spilled over down into the streets here in Prince George.”

Each week, Healy sets out with a pot of hot soup, bags of donated clothing, hygiene products, as well as first aid care. He then hands them out to those who need it most. Healy says; This isn’t a push to glamorize homelessness, these are real people who need help.

” I would like to have it turn into a full wrap-around community support group that starts from this level and makes its way up all the way up to the level of reintegration back into society”

Together we stand has caught the attention of many locally, in fact, it has already expanded to Castlegar. Gerry’s wish is to have other communities catch the wind and do the same. Healy knows there are roadblocks when it comes to helping from the city but he hopes they can work together going forward.

” I’ve talked to the Mayor, and they’re working on programs but they’re behind red tape and it just takes time.”
