195 active variants of concern in B.C., one in Northern Health

VICTORIA — Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced 1,506 new cases of COVID-19 in British Columbia over the weekend.

Here’s the regional breakdown:

  • Vancouver Coastal Health: 382
  • Fraser Health: 840
  • Island Health: 85
  • Interior Health: 80
  • Northern Health: 129

That brings the total number of cases in B.C. to 88,373, 81,890 of those people have recovered.

In addition to the new cases, Henry announced 163 new cases that are variants of concern. That brings the total number of cases in B.C. to 880, 195 are active cases. Of the 880 cases, 818 are the variant from the U.K., 41 the variant from South Africa and 21 the variant from Brazil.

Henry says 681 of the variants were discovered in Fraser Health, 161 in Vancouver Coastal Health, eight in the Island Health region, 23 in Interior Health and one in Northern Health.

She says there are now 4,987 active cases of the virus in B.C., 269 people are in hospital, 76 of whom are in critical or intensive care.

Sadly there have been 10 more deaths over the weekend for a total of 1,407 in B.C.

On the vaccination front, Henry says 409,301 people have now had their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

She also responded to concerns regarding the safety of the AstraZeneca vaccine after some European countries suspended its use by saying the AstraZeneca is safe and that “all vaccines are safe” for use.
