3,289 new cases of COVID-19 in B.C. over the weekend; 18 deaths

VICTORIA — The provincial government says there were 3,289 new cases of COVID-19 detected in B.C. over the weekend.

From Friday to Saturday, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry says 1,283 new cases detected, 1,036 from Saturday to Sunday and a further 970 from Sunday to today (April 12).

Here’s the regional breakdown of where the new cases were detected:

  • Vancouver Coastal Health: 740
  • Fraser Health: 1,957
  • Island Health: 167
  • Interior Health: 299
  • Northern Health: 125

Henry says there are 9,937 active cases of the virus, half of which are one of the variants of concern. In addition to that, 368 people are hospitalized, 121 of whom are in critical or intensive care units.

Sadly there have been 18 new deaths, bringing B.C.’s death toll to 1,513.

To date, 1,112,101 doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C., 87,744 of which are second doses.

Those aged 40 and up can now register for their COVID-19 vaccinations.

*After this story was posted, the provincial government corrected what Henry said regarding who can register for their vaccinations and released the following schedule:

Monday, April 12 – registration opens for people aged 55 and up

* Wednesday, April 14 – registration opens for people aged 50 and up

* Friday, April 16 – registration opens for people aged 45 and up

* Monday, April 19 – registration opens for people aged 40 and up
