PRINCE GEORGE – Mayor Lyn Hall has added his name to a long list of others in signing a letter to Premier John Horgan support of Barkerville. The historical site is asking the government to help them with $670,000 to offset a budget shortfall going into this season.

“We aren’t just a creative tourism site. We are Barkerville as a historical heritage resource,” explains Kate Cox, CEO of Barkerville. “And that’s the draw. So we drive tourism by default.”

In fact, they conservatively estimate the add $25 million in tourism dollars. But the fact is costs are rising and the facilities are becoming degraded without the funds to improve them. But, while Barkerfville is funded like a museum, it is much more than that.

“We’re both static-museum. So we have multiple museums within the site. We have 450,000 articles,” says Cox. “But we have multiple businesses here, too. We have restaurants. We have stores. Not just here on our site, but everybody in the community, including the little town of Wells. Everybody is affected by the kind of business that we draw here.”

So, while they are asking for immediate funding for the new season, which opens on June 26th, they are also asking for committed funding to the tune of $2.65 million per year for five years.
