PRINCE GEOR

GE – Mayor and Council have approved the City pursuing $2.5 million in funding from the federal and provincial governments under the “Strengthening Communities” fund. The funding amount is population-based so the amount incentivized is the maximum it could apply for.

The funding would support a variety of projects, all dealing with the City’s homeless population.

Specifically, it would be used to prep the new Community Safety Hub to be located at Second Avenue and George Street. As part of that, the City would hire two new outreach workers as part of a pilot program to work with the additional Bylaw Services Officers, who will be housed out of the Safety Hub.

As well, the funding would add an additional two RCMP Officers on top of the two dedicated to the downtown. Those officers would cover off the hours not covered by the original two.

The funding would also help fence the lot adjacent to the Hub and move and expand the Native Friendship Centre’s homeless storage site, that would would then include storage as well as showers.

Finally, the funding would be used to do a comprehensive engagement of the unsheltered population to determine a measure of success for the programs offered.
