Nurses hold rally outside CN center

Several nurses stood outside the CN center Saturday, holding signs for drivers passing through in honor of Nurses Appreciation Week.

Nurses encouraged drivers to honk their horns to give show their support. Nurse Tracey Jonker says this pandemic has been difficult for her to handle.

“We decided to come out because nurses are tired, we’re emotionally tired, physically tired, but more so emotionally tired. We’ve had enough of people not following the rules.” said Jonker

Jonker says those who choose to not follow health guidelines make their work much more difficult.

“During national nurses week it’s a time for us to celebrate, but we’re trying to get through this together but we feel angry, frustrated, just absolutely frustrated with the group of people not following the rules.”

Other groups came out to support the nurses, offering what tools they have to help the nurses get through this next wave. One of those was Wesley Mitchell, a traditional drummer who stood alongside the nurses during their rally.

“How could you not support these people? 12 hours a day, short staffed, short PPE, you know they’re politely asking to stand up for themselves for the community.” said Mitchell

While some across the street protested against the health guidelines, the nurses say they’re pleased with how the community has been handling the pandemic.

“We love this community, for the most part, the community has done wonderful things for nurses and all health care workers here in the north. So to hear them honk, just fills out tanks up. It’s really awesome.”
