Northern MP calls for national public bus plan

SMITHERS — A northern MP is calling on the federal government to come up with a national plan for bus passenger transportation in Canada.

It comes on the heels of Greyhound’s recent decision to end service country-wide.

Skeena-Bulkley Valley NDP MP Taylor Bachrach is encouraging the federal government to build on the success of BC Bus North, a public bus service which aims to fill the gaps left by Greyhounds departure from rural Canada in 2018.

Bachrach has written a letter to Canada’s Minister of Transport, encouraging him to expand the mandate of Via Rail to include public bus transportation.

He says an affordable bus system is needed to reconnect communities and ensure students, seniors, and others interested in safe, green transport can get to where they need to go.

“In 2018 when Greyhound pulled out of Western Canada, the NDP urged the Liberal government to look at solutions that could keep this vital service running.

“Instead, the Liberals stood by while the last routes disappeared. Now the situation is more urgent than ever. The government needs to step forward with a clear strategy to reconnect communities and keep rural Canadians safe. A national, public bus service would help to reconnect rural Canada,” says Bachrach.
