PRINCE GEORGE–This week marks Go by Bike week, an annual provincial event to encourage people to commute using bicycles.

Dane Greenwell, coordinator of the go by bike week here in Prince George, decided to up the ante and hold a race downtown on saturday.

It was called ‘Man vs. Machine.’

“The mayor Lyn hall and ex councilor Jillian Merrick, used to do a race all week for go by bike week cause they lived close together and they would make it city hall and they were only just a few minutes apart.” said Greenwell.

Four racers, four checkpoints, and four different modes of transportation. It was a competition to see how fast it would take each person to reach the four stops in their vehicles. The riders included mayor Lyn Hall and councilor Kyle Sampson. The rules were simple: each rider starts off in city hall, collects a ticket at each of the four checkpoints, and first one to make it to Rainbow Park wins.

“You know I’m a pretty competitive guy I’m gonna do what I can, but I’m very careful about this since it’s a bigger bike sometimes it’s a little more difficult to manuever through town than peddle bike will but I see Ron Gallo here and boy that’s gonna be tough if ron beats me.” said Hall.

There was lots of traffic and construction to navigate throughout the city.

Ron Gallo who rode a regular bike was in a tight race with Jacob Mullen who rode an E-bike.

Mayor Hall finished the race in about 20 minutes, crossing the finish line just seconds before councilor Sampson.

Competition aside, all the riders had fun and enjoyed the opportunity to promote cleaner modes of transportation.
