Dozens of people gather for the Every Child Matters march

PRINCE GEORGE – Dozens of people gathered on Monday morning to march in celebration of National Indigenous Peoples Day.

This day carried a lot of emotions and for the organizer of the march, Natalie Lawrance, she says that today not only strongly impacts her but the entire community.

“This is a tough time for a lot of people in our community right now – to support those closest to us, those who we might know who have been in residential schools. Show support to those people especially, research as much as you can and push for change,” says Lawrance.

The march began at Exploration Place with songs and drumming before the group headed down Queensway and then were lead back Lheidli T’enneh park to join the ceremony at the bandshell.

“I am happy to see all the supporters here. My mother is a residential school survivor and I am happy to be here honouring her and to be showing support to those who went to residential schools,” said Jayde Duranleau, a march attendee.

June 21 is a day to reflect and celebrate the history and heritage of Indigenous Peoples. This year is even more significant, in light of the recent discovery of the remains of children at former residential schools across Canada.
