Construction costs soar

PRINCE GEORGE – The Northern Regional Construction Association is just one of a number of industry representatives to make presentations to Council to paint a picture of challenges facing the industry and the impacts they have on public sector projects.

“We’re hearing throughout the province, concerns about cost overruns, concerns about delays in projects,” explains Scott Bone, with the NRCA. “So NRCA really took a position to create some awareness and communication about what are realy the impacts. Let’s provide the facts.”

And the facts are shocking. Construction Statistics for 2021 –

*Value of current construction: $120 Billion (60% in Northern BC)

*Proposed construction projects: $221 Billion

*Construction job openings (due to retirements and expansion by 2030): 26,806

*High school grads entering the industry: 1 in 45

Often municipalities, in particular, will approve a project with a certain price tag attached, but it will be many months or years before shovels are in the ground.

“One of the suggestions that we put before City Council is to ensure that your cost estimates at time of tender are reasonably accurate and using data from a cost estimate locally versus other areas.”
