PRINCE GEORGE — There are 39 wildfires burning in the Prince George Fire Centre (PGFC), including two new fires detected within the past 24 hours. Fire Information Officer Alex Lane says one of them was quickly actioned by initial attack crews and is now out.

“The largest fire closest to Prince George is the Chilako fire (G11126/90 kilometres southwest of PG) which is classified as out of control and is now 1471 hectares in size compared to approximately 700 hectares yesterday,” she says.

“Crews have been dealing with extreme fire behaviour over the past several days. Today there are 55 firefighters, 4 helicopters, and 26 pieces of heavy equipment engaged in indirect suppression.”

She says there are currently three wildfires of note within the PGFC, including the Chilako fire.

“The Cutoff Creek fire is 866 hectares and is out of control. Fifty-one firefighters, four helicopters, and eight pieces of equipment are working to secure the south and west sides of the fire. The Tentfire Creek fire is 715 hectares and is out of control. Three firefighters, two helicopters, and three pieces of heavy equipment are on site today working to establish a fire guards on the east and west flanks, which are expected to be complete today.”

Lane says they are anticipating hot and dry weather through the week and notes crews will continue to face challenges on these fires because of these conditions.

Province-wide there are currently 214 fires burning in B.C. Thirty-nine are new starts within the past 24 hours.

“It is incredibly important that the public adhere to the campfire and open burning bans in place. Human-cause wildfires are completely preventable and divert resources away from lightning caused fires.

“We are also urging everyone to take the time to make emergency preparations for their household and to FireSmart their homes and properties. Visit BCWildfire.ca and FireSmartBC.ca for more information,” says Lane.
