PRINCE GEORGE – As a new school year approaches, students at École Duchess Park Secondary (DPSS) will have a new space to explore called the Condor Room.

The redesigned space has held many titles since the school was built back in 2010, but will now have a name for good.

“Our district is really moving towards inclusivity, and celebrating Indigenous culture,” says Cathy Johnson, Vice Principal at DPSS. “This room is for everyone.”

Over the years, bits and pieces have been added to the school, and this is yet another piece that administrators hope makes the school more inclusive.

The Condor Room has an Indigenous focus, with Indigenous art lining the walls, and Indigenous Education workers part of the support network who will work inside it.

“Any Indigenous culture that you go into, we hold respect as a high priority in our culture, when we think of the Condor Room we think of respect where everyone is included ” says Mel Aksidean, Indigenous Education Worker for SD57.

Aksidean was one of the main figures behind the original idea of the Condor Room.

The art also has a backstory to it, a Duchess Park Alumni Kolby Antoine created the designs back when he attended then school before graduating in 2017.

Administrators say the space is open to anyone and everyone in the community, and hope it can make Duchess Park a better place, and a more inclusive place to be for many years to come.
