PRINCE GEORGE–Incumbent Conservative candidate Todd Doherty has kicked off his re-election campaign for this year’s election.

The Cariboo-Prince George candidate was first elected as MP back in 2015. Doherty is focused on tackling a few issues in his campaign including implementing a national suicide prevention hotline. A motion he introduced himself back in 2020.

“We know that when minutes count, having that simple three digit number is the way to go. What we have said is as a Conse rvative party and in our mental health action plan is that we will finally bring 9-8-8 to Canada,” said Doherty.

Mental health is one of the biggest issues he wants to address in his campaign. Doherty says he wants to encourage employers to add mental health coverage to their benefit plans by offering a tax credit for 25% of the cost of additional mental health coverage for the first three years.

When asked about the current drug crisis, the candidate said it’s not just a provincial problem, It’s a national health crisis.

“I think that when we look at the ongoing opioid crisis, I think that there’s a number of different issues that are attached to that. I think with our mental and mental illness, we need to make a strong focus on that, we need to invest in those organizations that provide those services at the grassroots level in our communities,” said Doherty.

On Tuesday, NDP Candidate Audrey McKinnon launched her campaign for the election.

Doherty says he’s not sure if he will host any campaign parties right now due to the ongoing wildfire situations and COVID-19 pandemic.

“Our province is facing unprecedented wildfires, we’ve just come through a global pandemic. I don’t know about having a party. I think we just continue doing the work that we’re doing: getting out, visiting, and seeing as many of our constituents as possible. We’ve got our office here where volunteers can gather. We’ll meet with volunteers and the constituents, but I think we’ll have to wait and see about the launch party,” said Doherty.

Doherty’s office can be found at 1905 Victoria Street.

No Liberal or Green Party candidates for the Cariboo-Prince George riding have been formally announced as of yet.

The federal election will be on September 20th.
