Busy start to the BC Northern Exhibition

PRINCE GEORGE – The smell of mini donuts and popcorn, the sounds of screams in the air…. it must be the BC Northern Exhibition! BCNE made its long-awaited return for its 109th annual fair.

“We have missed everybody – it is great to open the gates and welcome everybody back,” said BCNE General Manager, Sylvia Layzell.

Crowds swarmed the fairgrounds as soon as the gates opened on Thursday afternoon.

“Usually we have more people on Fridays and Saturdays but today (Thursday) has been pretty busy. That is a good sign for a good turnout this weekend – I think people are excited to have something to do this year,” said BCNE Office Assistant, Emma Johnson.

Last year, the events were canceled due to the pandemic and although things look a little different this time around, organizers have guaranteed a fun-filled weekend.

“This year we, unfortunately, weren’t able to do a full fair so we don’t have our main stage entertainment, our vendors, or our crafters. But what we do have is all of our 4H, lots of food trucks, and Midway,” added Layzell.

West Coast Amusements went through their inventory and brought all new rides that aren’t normally at BCNE.

“We have a brand new ride, called the Rockstar, it’s only been operating for the past four weeks. You sit on a couch style swing and you swing round and round about 40ft in the air,” said West Coast Amusements Manager, Darcy Benson.

The pandemic was hard on the amusement industry but for Carnies and Vendors, they are excited to be back in action.

“We were lucky enough to get back to work a month ago. It is pretty exciting watching all the kids having fun again and it is good for our employees and the community,” added Benson.

The BCNE will be on from August 19-22, 2021.

  • Barns open at 10:00 AM for 4H Achievements each day.
  • A variety of food trucks will open between 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM each day.
  • The Midway presented by Westcoast Amusements will open each day at 12:00 PM.

Aside from 4H, everything will be open until 11:00 PM each day depending on weather and attendance. Gate entry is free this year as well.
