PRINCE GEORGE – As wildfires continue to burn throughout the province, it’s important to protect your lungs.

According to Health Canada, smoke pollution contains fine particles that are not visible to the human eye. They can penetrate deep into our lungs and bloodstream, sometimes leading to serious health effects. Many people have been affected by the smoke this summer.

“What we really encourage people to do, especially those who have those preexisting conditions, is too early in the fire season. Is to make sure your disease is as well managed as possible. So that means, meeting with your health care provider, making sure you have prescriptions in place. that you have enough of your medication, that your medication is balanced, and also, that you’re doing everything else you can do to make that disease less severe. so, if you’re supposed to be at a program of exercise, if you’re supposed to be making modifications to your diet.. all of that stuff that you do will make you less likely to be affected by the smoke. ”

If you are exposed to long periods of smoke you may notice symptoms even if you’re healthy with no issues. It’s best to limit your time outside if you can, there are also a few more suggestions to help keep you and your body safe during wildfire season

“People with preexisting diseases, it is really important that your disease is well managed and that you have ample supply of your medication we strongly recommend room air cleaners, so these are a keep up filter air cleaner. they’re not super expensive.”
