PRINCE GEORGE– Wildfires in B.C. have caused a lot of problems. With over 200 wildfires currently burning in the province and 12,825 properties on evacuation alert, it can get challenging and stressful in these tricky situations.

In response to this the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) and the government of B.C. are working together to coordinate and strengthen resources to help people cope with these tough circumstances.

They suggest 3 main tips to help “steady ourselves” and help our Mental Health.

  • Prepare: Have a clear emergency plan and grab-and-go kit ready so that you can focus on other priorities.
  • Ask for help: Talk things through, name how you’re feeling and reach out to family, friends or a helping professional. If you have been evacuated, you can also ask an Emergency Support Services volunteer about the mental health or counseling support available to you.
  • Help others: Assisting others can help us regain a sense of purpose and community as we confront challenges together. Small actions can make a big difference.

Although the fire season may be coming to an end here in Prince George, there are still 53 active fires in the Prince George Fire Centre and people should always be prepared.

If a Wildfire does strike it’s always great practice having a Grab-n-Go box, with some food, water, a phone charger, I.D., and other essentials you might need to take with you.

If you do find you are struggling during these times you can always reach out to the BC mental health support phone line for 24/7 confidential support at 310-6789.
