PRINCE GEORGE – The University of Northern British Columbia Men’s Soccer team continues to develop a northern pipeline, as they look to add the best homegrown talent to the U SPORTS program. Today, the team announced the official commitment of Prince George product Trevor Scott to the Timberwolves roster for the 2021 Canada West season.

“It’s definitely a little crazy. Obviously, growing up in PG, going to all the TWolves games when you’re younger, playing on the youth teams, and finally getting to actually make it to the area you dreamed of the whole time. Finally getting to where you wanted to be the whole time. It is pretty exciting. The whole time playing youth soccer, this is always something you definitely dream of.”

Standing five-foot-seven, Scott relies of quickness, grit, and soccer IQ to effectively influence every match he competes in. The prospect of playing for his hometown team became a clearer goal as he trained with the Timberwolves Academy, under the watchful eye of UNBC coaches Steve Simonson and Francesco Bartolillo.

“Being in the Timberwolves Academy for a couple years, I think the first time I came was in Grade 11. I have been in contact with Steve (Simonson) since then. You know, I’m a small, fast guy with lots of one-on-one play. I like to take guys on. Playing through the mid, I like to play the wing, so lots of running and lots of speed. I am just good with my feet, really.”

Growing up playing with the Prince George Youth Soccer Association, the midfielder was able to hone his skills alongside fellow TWolves Demian Dron, Julian Daduica, Matt Botelho, and Connor Lewis. Now, the former U18 Provincial bronze medalist finds himself training alongside players from across the globe, preparing for a career at the highest level of university sport in the country.

“It is definitely awesome, and a crazy experience. Playing with guys you’ve looked up to for a while. Or guys you used to play with in youth who have made the step up in the last couple years. It is exciting, especially with the international guys. It clues you in to what level you’re at when you are playing with guys from Germany and France. It is definitely exciting.”

Simonson’s team is hard at work, readying themselves to make a push for the conference playoffs, as he balances a focus on this season and an eye on the future of the program. Adding a speedster with a hunger for soccer knowledge was a no-brainer, and he was thrilled to welcome Scott to the green and gold.

“Trevor is local player who we are really happy to have join us. In recent years, he has truly shown a progression to becoming a quality university prospect as he learned our playing philosophies and expectations within our Academy system. He has really stepped up his game in preseason and his creative side is starting to come out already within our sessions. I am excited and encouraged to see the changes in Trevor over time and look forward to more things to come from him.”

A 2021 graduate of the Prince George Secondary School, Scott is enrolled in general studies at UNBC. The 18-year-old and his new teammates open the Canada West season on September 10th, and he is ready to continue a journey that started when he was a little boy in youth soccer.

“This year, my main goal is to grow as a player. I am in this environment with all these amazing guys. Great players. I could see this team doing something this year. It’s really just learning from all the other guys and just trying to grow as much as I can as a player.”
