Proof of vaccination mandate rolls out in BC

The gym is following the mandate, but has given the option for some to freeze their memberships until restrictions are lifted.

“We have very developed members and it’s hard to do that. We have given the option to freeze the accounts for the time being and we’ll see how that works,” said Kean.

The owner says in the weeks leading up to the mandate, members on both sides of the debate have been outspoken over the new health order. Kean has had to make some tough decisions.

“Like there are some health reasons for people not being able to get the vaccine and it’s hard that they’re not able to come in and workout. Because this is not just physical wellness, it’s for mental health as well,” said Kean.

The Chamber of Commerce says it has been a similar story for other businesses in the city as well. But the majority of them are in favor of the mandate as a way to prevent from shutdowns.

“By in large, businesses are in support of this as a tool to stop shutdowns from happening. So if the vaccine card program—because it’s important to know it’s not a mandate, it’s a program—if that works and that keep businesses from shut down, there’s a win-win that comes from this,” said Todd Corrigall, CEO of Prince George Chamber of Commerce.

Some places are getting creative such as allowing only take-out to avoid the mandate and face possible retaliation from customers. Corrigall says that he wants the public to know that the business shouldn’t be given any blame.

“There are going to be people that are upset when changes come into place. There are gonna be businesses that are challenged by process through this, we certainly appreciate that. What’s most important to know is that this is coming from government. It has to be enacted. Businesses are following the guidelines and they’re finding ways that they can operate within that spectrum,” said Corrigall.

Kean says overall, staff and members have not faced big issues on day one of the mandate. While some have frozen or cancelled their membership, this month alone they did receive lots of new member sign ups.

“So far it’s been okay for our staff. They haven’t felt threaten or anything like that which is good,” said Kean.

To show your proof of vaccination, you can download a QR code to your phone. Some paper copies can be used as proof of vaccination until September 26th. The full list can be found here.

One dose is required to enter businesses. By October 24th, you must be fully vaccinated to enter certain places.
