Prince George residents question if election needed to be called.

PRINCE GEORGE – Last night’s election wrapped up with the Trudeau Liberals being reelected to a minority government.

When Justin Trudeau called the election back in August, many people questioned the call, saying that it’s too soon and that we’re in the middle of a pandemic. Fast Forward to Monday night, and it felt like Deja-vu, with the Liberals re-elected with almost the same seat count as the last federal election. Here in Prince George, residents expressed mixed feelings on whether or not the election was necessary. With most saying it was a waste of money and not necessary.

Trudeau and the Liberals have currently won or are ahead in 158 ridings, 12 seats short of what was needed for a majority government. All of this raising eyebrows as the election was the most costly election ever, with a price tag of just over 600 million dollars.

Doug Jarvis, a Political Science instructor at UNBC says that even though the election was held no parties necessarily won.

The Liberal’s didn’t win a majority government which is why the election was called, the conservatives had an early lead but couldn’t capitalize on it and the NDP failed to establish voters. –Doug Jarvis, Political Science, UNBC

As for where the other parties stand, the Conservatives are ahead in 119 seats, The Bloc Quebecois 34, The NDP 25, and the Green Party won 2.
