CO Service: Black bear suffers ‘cruel and unnecessary death’

PRINCE GEORGE – A cruel and unnecessary death. That is how the Prince George Conservation Officer Service describes the recent death of a black bear in the North Nechako area.

Conservation Officers responded to the call earlier this week. After further investigation, they discovered the bear suffered undue harm and died from a single pellet shot to the animal’s lung.

The CO’s don’t know when the animal was shot or how long it wandered the area until it died.

The pellet that killed the bear is smaller than a push pin. According to the COs, this type of weapon to scare a wild animal from your property violates the Wildlife Act.

Bears are known to arrive when food attractants are around, and the CO Service says many residents in Prince George are falling short of managing unnatural food sources.

The CO service called the shooting unethical, adding it could have led to a dangerous situation because it left the bear in an agitated state.
