Recent study shows youth cannabis-related crime down significantly

PRINCE GEORGE– Dr. Russ Callaghan, a Northern Medical Program professor at UNBC, recently released a study on youth cannabis offenses after legalization.

He found that police-reported incidents among youth for cannabis-related crimes dropped significantly to 65 percent after Canada legalized the plant back in 2018.

The project included a national team of researchers from UNBC, and Dr. Callaghan and his team are looking to conduct a follow-up study to examine the impacts of cannabis legalization on police-reported crimes over a 14 and a half month period.

Here in Prince George, a local pot shop has also noticed that they haven’t had to turn away a lot of minors trying to buy the famous plant, however, they continue to I.D. people who enter the shop who look under the age of 25.

A big reason for the reduction in your related crime is the Cannabis Act, which allows youth aged 12-17 to possess up to 5 grams of dried cannabis for personal consumption or sharing.
