PRINCE GEORGE – Today is the day to start wearing poppies as a symbol of remembrance of all those who lost their lives in various conflicts so that we could enjoy the freedoms we have today.

And this is a special year for the poppy.

That has been the symbol for a century.

“It shows the battle after the battles. This is the battle for remembrance,” says John Scott with the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 43.

About 30,000 poppies are heading out to nine different “districts” in the city where people can donate and the money goes to various causes.

“Just here in this city alone, we raise between $70,000 and $100,000 a year. This is used for veterans in need. Some of it goes back to the community, to the hospital, and other organizations that need it. To the hospice house. We always help the hospice out and some of it goes to the[Legion’s] Youth Games. So wear the poppy this year with the special knowledge of its historical significance.
