PRINCE GEORGE – For the first time this season, the Prince George Spruce Kings lost at home as the West Kelowna Warriors came away with a 3-2 victory Wednesday night inside the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena.

In the opening period, the Spruce Kings found themselves on an early power-play. Like numerous times this season, the Spruce Kings cycled the puck from Simon Labelle, up to the point with Dylan Schives, who then connected cross-ice to John Herrington. The 19-year-old let off a one-timer from his home above the circle, putting the puck in past Johnny Derrick to give the Spruce Kings a 1-0 lead. It marked Herrington’s 8th goal of the season and 5th on the power-play.

Later in the period, off the faceoff, a Jayden Price shot was redirected in the slot by Chase Dafoe and passed Aaron Trotter to tie the game. Dafoe’s third of the year has the lone assist credited to Price at 7:53.

The Spruce Kings added another before the end of the period. The puck came to Colton Cameron at the left point from a Simon Labelle pass, and the Cameron point shot was redirected in the slot by Rowan Miller and passed Johnny Derrick to regain the Spruce Kings lead. Miller’s fourth of the season was assisted by both Cameron and Labelle at 15:40.

In the 2nd period, on a Warrior power-play, a Nick Ardanaz feed came to the right circle for Tyler Cristall who ripped a one-timer right through the legs of Aaron Trotter to tie the game at two. Cristall’s third of the season was assisted by both Ardanaz and John Evans at 3:41.

A few moments later as a Warrior power-play ended, they maintained offensive zone pressure and got rewarded for it, courtesy of Felix Trudeau. Much like Cristall’s marker, Trudeau got the puck at the right circle, and fired a wrist shot short side on Aaron Trotter to make it 3-2 West Kelowna. Trudeau’s tally had the assists credited to both Tyler Rubin and Carter Schmidt at 8:16

The score remained the same through the final 20 minutes as the West Kelowna Warriors sealed their second win of the season against the Spruce Kings. Prince George’s record now sits at 7-3 while West Kelowna improves to 6-2.

The Spruce Kings now get ready for their Friday tilt against the Trail Smoke Eaters. The game will mark the first of five themed Decade Nights put on by the team as the Spruce Kings celebrate 50 years. The 70s will be the decade being celebrated on Friday.

Friday will also mark Corey Cunningham’s return to Prince George since being traded to the Smoke Eaters. The Prince George product spent the past four seasons with his hometown club and was traded with the intention of preparing the 20-year-old for his time at Merrimack College. Cunningham has two goals and five assists in nine games with the Smoke Eaters this season.
