Prince George shelters ready for winter

Dec 6, 2021 | 5:44 PM

PRINCE GEORGE – With temperatures now well below freezing in Prince George, marginalized and homeless populations have been sourcing out shelters.

According to the Association Advocating For Women And Community (AWAC) demand is up for shelter space.

In 2018, over 130 people were considered homeless in Prince George, in early 2021 that figure was up by 25% to 163 unsheltered people.

When the temperature drops below minus five that is typically when the hunt for warm space begins says Connie Abe, Executive Director with AWAC.

“It is a bit different this year because of COVID and now with the new variant,” said Abe. “There’s always space left, we never turn anyone away.”

The Extreme Weather Response Team has been helping in a big way this year get the message out to those who remain unsheltered on the streets.

“We go out as a team in a vehicle every night, seven days a week,” said Mark DeSouza, Manager of the Extreme Weather Response Team. “We give out toques, we give out gloves, jackets, blankets, hot pockets, and the favourite item is hot chocolate.”

DeSouza also helps share his story with those on the streets who may be struggling to find their way, and encourage them to get help.

DeSouza himself has been a notable success story for AWAC, part of Olive’s Branch back in April recovering from addiction.

Back in late March DeSouza spoke with CKPG News about his journey and how he looked forward to helping others, and already eight months later he has accomplished that goal.

AWAC said they are hoping the public can help them out with socks, boots, coats, and winter wear to hand out to those in need this winter season.
