‘Hartobahn’ prompts safety concern from RCMP

PRINCE GEORGE – A stretch of Highway 97 through the Hart has earned a new nickname from the community who now refer to the portion of road as the ‘Hartobahn.’

“We’re here to reinforce the message that road safety is everyone’s concern and as a community, we need to be working together to make sure everyone makes it home safe,” said Cpl. Jennifer Cooper with the Prince George RCMP

During our short time roadside with members of the Prince George RCMP, and BC Highway Patrol, several passenger vehicles were issued violations for speeding. Two drivers were caught going no less than 100 km/h on a portion of highway with a 70 km/h speed limit.

The safety message from RCMP and ICBC comes following a number of serious accidents involving pedestrians since the fall, just over a month ago a pedestrian was struck and killed on Highway 97 and Northwood Pulp Mill road.

Cooper added whether you are a driver or a pedestrian, there are measures that need to be taken into account whether that is slowing down for drivers, or wearing extra reflective gear for pedestrians.

Further to that, another pedestrian was struck and killed on first avenue recently as well.

“We’ve seen the snow, we’ve seen the ice, we’re getting the cold frigid temperatures so we need to adjust our driving behaviour,” said Doug Mac Donald with ICBC.

Mac Donald added stopping speed, steering ability, and other aspects of driving are greatly affected during the winter, and drivers need to take action in response.

Mounties and members of the BC Highway Patrol will be out in full force this holiday season at Counter Attack checkpoints while also targeting speeding motorists on roads in the region.
