Another thick layer of snow covers Prince George streets
PRINCE GEORGE- Another large dump of snow hit Prince George this weekend. Environment Canada Meteorologist, Doug Lundquist says an additional 19 cm fell downtown, while 15 cm hit the airport. Snow density downtown increased from 37 cm to 56 cm. With temperatures expected to hover around the zero mark this week, Lundquist has some safety concerns.
“What I worry most about is the fact that we had it so cold for so long that anywhere there’s bare concrete or pavement or where people are trying to walk or drive. It’s cold so this rain that we’re getting now onto that really freezing cold pavement is going to cause icy conditions,” he explained.
Prince George has over a half a metre of snowpack in some areas already. Lundquist says this amount of snowpack isn’t unheard of for the middle of winter in PG, but it is definitely on the higher end. While the higher temperatures won’t completely get rid of the pack this week, it will consolidate quicker in areas closer to the river. Residents are being reminded to be extra cautious while navigating icy conditions.
“Make sure you have the proper footwear when you’re walking out and about just watch where you’re placing your feet, have your head up too. Drivers should watch DriveBC, really I’d say try and travel as little as possible and plan your trip well and leave early,” he added.
