SD57 monitoring attendance as BC schools re-open following extended holiday break

PRINCE GEORGE – Most things appear the same at schools in BC, but there are plenty of protocols ready in case as BC schools re-open following an extended holiday break.

Enhanced safety measures as previously announced by BC’s Minister of Education, and brand new health and safety plans done on a school by school basis will guide students and staff through this Omicron wave of COVID-19.

One of the largest changes is around attendance monitoring which has now become one of the key ways the district can track the potential spread of the virus instead of what were previously school exposure notices through public health.

“Currently we’re monitoring the attendance of both staff and students and there are two different processes,” said Cindy Heitman, Acting Superintendent of School District 57. “We’re in the process of identifying what a normal attendance for this time of year would be pre-COVID so we’re looking back about two years ago to see what normal attendance would be,”

When SD57 determines what normal is, the percentage of students absent will be crucial to determining how much COVID-19 is potentially inside a school.

Students who do choose to attend school will be screened and sent home if they do not pass the daily health check.

When more than 10% of students in a class, or 25% in a grade are absent, that will trigger an investigation by Northern Health and by SD57 in lieu of contact tracing.

A serious concern when there is not enough staff is a functional closure, Superintendent Heitman said it may be a short notice decision on something of that nature.

The largest focus is on the continuity of learning, no matter if there is a closure or not, or if students are home sick, educators are expected to provide learning material.
