Mayor still hopeful for complex care for PG

PRINCE GEORGE – “Certainly the 13 of us [in the BC Urban Mayors’ Caucus] are of the opinion that complex care needs to be provided throughout the province. And whether that’s four or five locations throughout the province and, fo me, Prince George is ideal because we’re a huge hub for the entire north.”

That was Mayor Lyn Hall on January 11th, responding to a request to the Province from the BC Urban Mayors Caucus for complex care centres. Less than ten days later, the Province announced four such centres. For Vancouver, Abbotsford and Surrey. Disappointing?

“Not so much discouraging. I think our goal as a Mayors’ Caucus, the 13 of us, we’re really take a look at where complex care facilities could be located. And we knew it would four of five at a time, not necessarily seeing a dozen complex care facilities across the province. So I’m still very encouraged that we’re going to see something this year.”

While the Mayor is optimistic, the MLA for the area is very disappointed that the North has been overlooked for such services. Again.

“If this is the initial phase and there are other communities considered, then that’s one thing. But there are other ways that we can provide the supports in the meantime,” says Shirley Bond, who says the centres will help about 100 people and are located in large urban centres. “These challenges exist across British Columbia. We absolutely need to continue to make the case.”
