PRINCE GEORGE – Chemistry takes time.

However, two local CrossFit athletes got themselves in sync in a short period of time and entered the Peace Region CrossFit Championship this past weekend in Grande Prairie, only to then finish 1st place in the pairs competition. 26-year-old Aly Weller and 21-year-old Gemma Marchant were paired up only four months ago.

“I actually found this competition online and sent it to Gemma and Aly,” stated Tricia Klein, a coach at CrossFit Northern ICE in Prince George. “Thats where they started to work together and said ‘yup, we’re in’ and they just kept training together.”

The relationship between the two initially was a competitive one but quickly developed into one where they were training together at CrossFit Northern ICE in Prince George in order to compete as a team.

“Aly’s always been the one at the gym to beat,” admitted Marchant. “Going into it, I was a bit scared that Aly would be carrying the team but it’s nice to go to a competition and see all of the work you’ve put in.”

“I think we both have strengths and weaknesses, so it’s nice to work together and I can give her some pointers, and she can give me some pointers. I think it’s awesome to be able to have that.”

Coming away as champions of the event, the pair admit there were nerves leading up to the weekend but knew they could treat it as if it was just another workout.

“We work out everyday, so it’s just another workout,” said Weller on their mindset heading into the competition in Grande Prairie.

“I think Aly and I are very similar in a lot of ways,” said Marchant. “We both are very competitive in nature, but also we just generally enjoy the same things so once we got to know each other we clicked and everything just worked itself out.”

The pair finished first in the majority of the events over the weekend and held the lead from Day 1 heading into Day 2, adding some confidence as they looked to wrap up the weekend on top.

“I just kind of knew just based on what was coming out that they were likely to dial this in and take first,” said Klein.

And held on they did, crowned champs and back at the gym a short time later putting in the work to stay on top.
