‘It’s a real crisis’: Vet shortage putting pressure on local ranchers

PRINCE GEORGE – Since the pandemic started, it seems everyone knows someone who has gotten a dog or a cat, putting a massive strain on already stretched veterinarians, although the problems don’t end there.

For ranchers, problems around the availability of veterinarians for large animals have existed for a lot longer than the pandemic, but they’re getting worse according to industry leaders.

“It’s a real crisis,” said Jenn Saunders, Co-Owner of Chillo Creek Ranch. “It’s usually an emergency when you need a large animal vet, and we’re coming up on calving season, so there are calving problems.”

Chillo Creek Ranch located west of Prince George, about 30 minutes from the city’s downtown core is struggling along with many others getting service from a vet.

The ranch which was recently started in 2018 by the Saunders is growing in numbers, more cattle has meant a growing potential for veterinary service, something which is already hard to come by.

In Prince George, most ranchers and farmers share one vet, one that the Saunders family cannot thank enough, and one they believe could use some help.

According to the BC Cattlemen’s Association (BCCA), there are more problems than solutions at the moment for the crunch in veterinary services in the province.

A sheer increase in numbers is something General Manager of the BCCA Kevin Boon believes is needed, although access in more rural and remote areas remains a challenge beyond that.

Boon noted this is not a new problem but it is one that is getting worse, recently highlighted by the devastating floods and wildfires the province, and our livestock have had to endure.

As solutions are worked on, life at Chillo Creek continues, although not without challenges.

With limited access to a vet, Jenn and Tim are forced into action themselves periodically for procedures, or injections.

Anything to preserve the herd and brand they’ve built near Mud River for their children to take over one day.
