100 MILE HOUSE, B.C. — A senior citizen is facing a series of charges after a confrontation with staff at a 100 Mile House liquor store over his alleged refusal to wear a mask.

In a release, Staff Sgt. Svend Neilsen says officers were called to the B.C. Liquor Store on Highway 97 Sunday (Feb. 13) just before 1:00 p.m., finding a 74-year-old man yelling at staff for refusing to serve him. Upon the officers’ arrival, the man allegedly turned his vitriol toward them and was arrested for causing a disturbance.

Upon investigation, including viewing high quality surveillance video, officers determined the man had entered the store maskless, was offered a mask to wear but refused.

He grabbed a case of beer and brought it to the counter to pay. Staff denied him service.

As an employee brought the case of beer back to the cooler, the customer allegedly came up behind him and assaulted him before grabbing the case of beer once again and returning to the checkout counter.

After a second refusal of service, the man responded by throwing the case of beer on the floor, causing several bottles to smash.

Now facing several new charges, the man was released on scene under conditions related to the offences.
