PRINCE GEORGE—A massive list of nearly 100,000 donors was leaked earlier this week. The list of donors are of the Freedom Convoy that is now occupying Ottawa. Here in the north, donations were high, estimating to be at least $87,845.

CKPG-TV could not verify the validity of the list, therefore no identifying information is being released. At least 93,000 names, email addresses, postal codes, and donation amounts were released,

Originally, GoFundMe had a donation campaign on its site which garnered more than $10 million. However, the site announced it would stop the campaign. Organizers quickly flocked to Christian fundraising site GiveSendGo, which to date has raised more than US$9.6 milllion.

CKPG-TV categorized donation amounts using postal codes by federal election ridings: Prince George—Peace River—Northern Rockies, Cariboo—Prince George, and Skeena-Bulkley Valley.

Prince George is part of two ridings. To get a more accurate number, donations from Prince George residents was categorized by postal codes V2K, V2L, V2M, and V2N. They were not included in each of their federal ridings statistics.

PG-PR-NR: $37,442 was donated

Cariboo-Prince George: $19,995 was donated

Skeena—Bulkley Valley: $12,870 was donated

Prince George (V2K, V2L, V2M, V2N postal codes): $16,888 was donated

There were at least 500 donations given to the convoy. Some people donated multiple times and with different amounts. The highest in the north was a $5,000 donation within the PG—PR—NR riding. Cariboo—Prince George’s highest donation was $3,333. Skeena—Bulkley Valley highest was $1,500. One resident in Prince George donated $1,000.

“In the more conservative ridings, federal ridings dominated by the conservative party and provincial ridings that overlap that are dominated by the BC liberal party, the centre right parties. You know there would be more support for conservative causes. You know there’s a bigger correlation here.” said Chris Beach, Political Science Instructor at CNC.

Beach says these donations show a correlation between the amount given and election results.

“Because if you look at, say the margins of victory for Bob Zimmer in the [Prince George—Peace River—Northern Rockies] riding conservative party, often he has an easier time of it, if you will. Or he gets more votes than someone like Todd Doherty who’s in [Cariboo—Prince George]. Although Todd Doherty has easily won the riding in recent years, often Bob Zimmer has a greater share of the vote. Really high margins, really.” said Beach.

However, Beach adds that donations aren’t a tell-all for political affiliations. He believes some of the donations stem from those across the political spectrum and from those who are simply frustrated with the ongoing mandates.

“There is quite a strong correlation between small seat conservatives, libertarian types, and supporters of the green party for example. You may have the odd NDP supporter that also is just tired of the mandates.” said Beach.
