PRINCE GEORGE – Sustainable buildings are designed to help reduce the overall impact on the environment and human health during and after construction.

A local couple has stepped away from the traditional stick frame home build and are constructing a rammed earth home.

A rammed earth home is constructed of compacted soil moulded between plywood forms.

Bryan VanDinter and Monica Mattfeld’s goal is to build a home with energy-efficient material without negatively affecting the environment.

The thick walls help insulate the interior from the heat in the summer and cold in the winter.

The construction of Northern BC’s first rammed earthed home began last summer.

According to Bryan and Monica, “the home will never need painting, and it can last up to 500 years, if not more.”

The home build follows many of the same methods used several thousand years ago. It all also falls in line with the modern building codes. The goal is to have the home completed this summer.
