PRINCE GEORGE — The University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) Timberwolves women’s basketball team’s season is over.

After defeating Brandon University in the first round of the Canada West playoffs 87-60 a day earlier, the women T-Wolves fell to the University of Regina 77-66 on Saturday (March 5).

The T-Wolves trailed by seven at halftime before a 25-17 third quarter gave them a slim 57-56 lead heading in the fourth and final frame. However, Regina went off with 21 points in the fourth quarter en route to their win and berth in the quarter-finals.

Sveta Boykova and Alina Shakirova each had 15 points to co-lead UNBC in scoring.

Sarah Kuklisin, who scored 11 points and added three rebounds, says the quarter-final was one of the T-Wolves’ most consistent games of the season.

“People were crashing the boards, hustling for loose balls. The effort was there, and I am so proud of my team,” Kuklisin says. “If this was going to be our last game, I wanted to finish strong and leave it all on the court. I tried to be confident. That is the key to this game, and I really tried to leave it on the court this game.”

The Canada West women’s basketball playoffs wrap up with the semifinals and final on March 18 and 19.
