‘Girls Rock!’ teaches young athletes curling and empowerment

PRINCE GEORGE—32 lucky girls got their chance to meet some olympic medalists all while trying out a sport ahead of the World Women’s Curling Championship.

Girls Rock! was presented today at the Prince George Golf and Curling Club. A training camp, hosted Curl BC and Women Curling Leaders Circle It’s meant to not only teach young athletes how to land the rock on the button, it’s also aiming to empower them.

“We wanna make sure that girls feel safe, and welcomed, and comfortable out here. You know if they’ve ever had any hesitation because they didn’t want to try something in a crowd, that maybe they didn’t feel capable, that they got a really safe and welcoming environment.” said Elaine Dagg-Jackson, National Coach & Program Manager, Curling Canada.

The event is also kicking off a series of workshops that will feature women who hold leadership roles in curling.

“They’re going to have some talks around the table to see what we can do to even make it easier for girls and women to become involved in curling, either by playing the sport, becoming an official, a coach, a scorekeeper, many different aspects that they could become involved in and we’re gonna tackle some of those really interesting topics.” said Dagg-Jackson.

Among the crowd of mentors were olympic medalists, including Cori Morris, Lead for Team Canada Curling in the 2010 Olympic games. She told CKPG News that having the opportunity to teach young athletes the sport is a ‘responsiblity.’

“Curling is something I’m very passionate about. It’s wonderful that curling Canada has created these opportunities and is empowering us, to in turn go out into the community and inspire others. So hopefully we’ll see a heap of new curlers and some of these faces on the podium for years to come.” said Morris.
