Cougars step into playoff position with win over Royals
PRINCE GEORGE — Just once point separated the Prince George Cougars and Victoria Royals heading into the final regular season home game at the CN Centre, and it remained as such afterwards, only the Cougars leapfrogged the Royals and the Vancouver Giants in the standings with a 2-1 win.
Their 23rd win of the season puts the Cougars ahead of both teams in the Royals and Giants, tied with the Spokane Chiefs in points, and back into the playoff picture with two games remaining in the regular season.
With the game marking the final game of the regular season at the CN Centre, the Cougars celebrated their graduating players. Captain Jonny Hooker, Connor Bowie, and Jonas Brondberg are all 20-year olds on the roster. Bowie has spent five seasons in Prince George. Hooker was acquired during the 2019/2020 season from the Brandon Wheat Kings. Brondberg was acquired in the trade with the Portland Winterhawks in December.
Despite Tyler Brennan, their usual starter, being back in the lineup following an upper body injury suffered last weekend, Ty Young got the start in net for the Cougars. Meanwhile, Tyler Palmer got the nod between the pipes for the Royals.
