WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C. — The BC Wildfire Service is planning a prescribed burn near Williams Lake, covering approximately 33 hectares adjacent to White Road. The burn may begin as early as Wednesday (April 13) and will continue periodically until April 30.

Smoke and flames from the prescribed burn will be highly visible from Williams Lake, Williams Lake First Nation, Highway 97 and surrounding areas.

BC Wildfire Service staff, the Williams Lake Fire Department and local First Nations fire crews will prepare, control and monitor the fires at all times.

The BC Wildfire Service said in a press release Monday (April 11) that the timing of the burn will depend on weather conditions and wind.

“Ignitions will proceed only if conditions are suitable and allow for quick smoke dissipation,” reads the press release.

The purpose of the burn is to reduce the wildfire hazard in the area and maintain fuel management treatment work that was done in 2010.

The service said it will also promote the growth of local species and reduce the spread of invasive species.
