PRINCE GEORGE—161 acres of land around Ginter’s Meadow was recently put up for sale for development and some concerned citizens want to put a stop to it.

Ginter’s Green Forever is a group of concerned citizens who teamed up with a 3rd year UNBC Environmental & Sustainability Studies class to conduct a survey about the multi-use land.

The area adjacent to Ginter’s Meadow is a popular spot for locals to hike and take their pets for a walk and was put up for sale recently. The listing is selling the land as a development opportunity.

A survey conducted by the UNBC students showed that 89.7 % of respondents disagree that the area should be developed and 97.5% agree that the area should remain a green space.

According to Selene Maxwell from Ginter’s Green Forever, “People in our city really understand all the values the forested area brings to our city. We see it as our Stanley Park and we expect our local government to value it in the same way.”

“Urban forests are critical pockets of biodiversity, habitat, and climate mitigation. They help keep our concrete landscape cool and protect us from floods, erosion and landslides; an important issue given the steep terrain and a large amount of water in this area. Also since a large amount of this area is made up of broadleaf trees it also offers fire protection,” emphasizes Jenn Matthews from Ginter’s Green Forever.

Survey respondents listed the area as contributing recreational, ecological and social value to the community.

“These places are what make many of us happy to live here. To be able to bike or walk on many kilometers of trails, in beautiful diverse forests that provide habitat for moose, foxes, bears, and birds, right in the heart of our city is just amazing. It’s time to update our community plan so that it honours these assets and our citizens’ desires to have them protected,” adds Matthews.
