Councillors call for public meeting following uptick in fires

PRINCE GEORGE – Four Prince George City Councillors have come together to call for a public meeting following a number of fire-related incidents, many isolated to the downtown core.

The latest was a fire Easter Monday that led to the complete loss of Barbers on 3rd, and what would’ve been a new tattoo shop planning to open.

“I have not seen the uptick in fires like we have had in the last couple of years, in my lifetime,” said Councillor Terri McConnachie.

Councillors Terri McConnachie, Brian Skakun, Kyle Sampson, and Cori Ramsay believe more can be done given the resources at the city’s disposal.

“We need to tell people, what is the plan,” said McConnachie. “Short-term, and long-term.”

Adding that plan needs to be communicated to the community.

The councillors believe ahead of the summer season more should be done to prepare for possible encampments, increased crime, and more garbage.

Downtown business owner and member of the Downtown Business Advocacy Group John Zukowski said any action is good action.

The statistics from last few years don’t show a large jump in structural fires, in 2019 PG Fire-Rescue crews responded to 52, in 2020 the same number. In 2021 the total was up by three to 55 fires.

The numbers for 2022 so far have not been reported.

The data about where those fires have taken place has also not been reported.
