PRINCE GEORGE — The Prince George Gnats Rugby Club had a successful weekend defeating the Williams Lake Rustlers 36-22 in their home-opening match, and now they’re looking ahead to what the season has to offer on and off the pitch.

The team prides itself on making its club a community that helps support new people from all walks of life. With players who have been with the program for upwards of 17 years, it provides a good foundation for those wanting to learn the sport or just be a part of a group that wants to have fun.

“A huge part of rugby isn’t actually playing, it’s the family aspect and social aspect. Where it’s a fun game to watch and then afterwards no matter what happens on the field we all still go have a drink together,” said Kevin Conway, a member of the club.

Getting out and playing is the best way to learn rugby and with a team that has just brought on a handful of new players, they’re happy to start playing games so that they can put their newfound rugby knowledge to the test.

“We have a lot of new guys so it was good for those new guys to get in the games we also have a lot of guys who have played for multiple years who are new to town and they seem to meld with the guys well. There are obviously things we need to work on but we definitely some good things that came out of the game,” said a longtime member of the Gnats, Theodor Thudwig.

The Gnats are constantly recruiting for their program. More information about the Club can be found on its Facebook page.
