PRINCE GEORGE — The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George (RDFFG) will be sending a letter to Premier John Horgan asking that Victoria issue an apology for its role in the Sixties Scoop.

The Sixties Scoop is a series of policies enacted by provincial child welfare authorities starting in the mid-1950s which saw thousands of Indigenous children taken from their homes and families and placed in foster homes, and eventually adopted out to white families from across Canada and the United States.

A RDFFG report points out that provincial governments in Manitoba, Alberta, and Sasktachewan have already issued apologies to Sixties Scoop survivors but B.C.’s provincial government hasn’t.

The report says an apology would help in “our ongoing journey towards reconciling the atrocities committed against Indigenous Peoples in this country.”
