PRINCE GEORGE- As Prince George gets its first taste of summer, more and more people will be spending their time floating down locals rivers, including the Nechako River.

With the high water levels and temperatures still cold, there are a few things BC AdventureSmart advises you to look out for.

“An unexpected fall into the cold water is is a shock to the system. What we have is what we call the 1-10-1 rule.” says Executive Director Sandra Riches. ” You have about one minute to take control of your breathing and calm down a little bit, about 10 minutes of really controlled body movements and then about one hour before hypothermia would set in if you’re still in the water.”

Another thing to be careful of when out on the water is what BC AdventureSmart calls strainers, usually visible objects submerged due to high waters.

“A boat, a kayak, a canoe, a stand-up paddleboard, a person may get shoved up against that strainer,” said Riches. “Always look for those hazards as you go down the river.”

BC AdventureSmart also made it clear whether you are swimming, kayaking or floating, a life jacket is still the top priority.

Remembering the three T’s is essential if you plan to float on the river this summer. Train, trip plan and take the essentials, including sunscreen, bug spray and proper clothing.
