To Your Health: Stretching

PRINCE GEORGE—An everyday activity for some people, an afterthought for others.

“Stretching should be something that people do mindfully every day if they can. It doesn’t have to be for very long. It doesn’t have to be anything structured like a yoga class,” said Rachelle Diachuk, Owner of Sunset Studio.

Stretching helps increase your range of motion. That gives you more freedom of movement and can help prevent injuries, from the serious to the mundane.

“Just through everyday life, you’ll get poor posture. So it’s really important to counteract that,” said Tara Webber, Owner of XConditioning.

A large portion of the population sits at a desk all day for work and that can wreak havoc on your body. From neck pain to a tight chest and sore legs, stretching can help reduce pain and stiffness

“Stress and inflexibility tend to go hand-in-hand. And so it can be a great way to, you know, decrease stress a little bit, whether it’s physical or mental,” said Webber.

Whether you are stretching for de-stressing or to get back that flexibility you once had, it is important to know exactly what you are doing.

“So stretching is super beneficial, obviously. I think we all know that, but stretching without strength can be just as damaging as perhaps not stretching at all,” said Diachuk.

Stretching should never cause pain. Hold static stretches for 30 to 60 seconds. Deep breathing during stretching can improve your ability to reach a little bit farther. Think about adding some dynamic stretching into your routine. Always warm up your body before stretching because stretching cold muscles can hinder athletic performance in the best of circumstances and can cause injury in the worst.
